Task 1 Rubric

You already learned what to expect and how to respond in the writing module. More significantly, you know the differences between General Training Task 1 and Task 2 & Academic Task 1 and Task 2. This means that now is the optimal time to train your brain to think like an examiner.

Knowing how to take the test is half of the equation; the other half revolves around how it is marked. As you already are aware, examiners mark the test, and they know what they are doing. The Task 1 public rubric is filled with two pages of specific points and ESL jargon that correspond to each band.

The good news is that you don’t need to memorize the entire two pages of the rubric. Rather you can pick two bands: the one that you need and the one that you want. Then, you focus on the keywords in each that will net you that score.

Internalizing this rubric will provide you with the best option for boosting your band score by one. This is not an exaggeration.

When you learn how to shape your mind to think like the people who are marking your Task 1, you know exactly what you need to do in order to get a 7, for example. Or, if you need a 7 but you want an 8, what is stopping you? Nothing—because an 8 is possible—with the right training, of course. Bands 7 and 8 are not identical, and once you break each band down, you are able to leverage your knowledge to become victorious. Victory will come in the form of a higher score. Why? Well, you are armed with information that most candidates are never aware of, despite it being public information. This information enables you to instantly create a plan that best aligns with your needs, and it trains your mind to think like an examiner. Therefore, you are no longer the candidate, you are a candidate with an examiner’s mindset. That is incredibly powerful.
